I am a mother of six. I built a career in medicine over the past twenty years, and somewhere in the middle of raising kids and building a practice, my own body started sending me signals I did not expect this soon. Hot flashes at my desk between patients. Nights I would wake up soaked and wide awake at 3 a.m., doing math on how many hours of sleep I had left before the alarm. A brain that used to hold ten things at once suddenly dropping the third one.
I am in my late 40s. I am in perimenopause, on my way to menopause, and I am living every bit of what you are living right now.
Here is what I know as a physician that most women never get told. Perimenopause can start in your late 30s, and it can run for years before a period ever actually stops. Your labs can come back looking completely normal while you feel like a stranger in your own body, because the labs were never built to catch what you are describing. That gap, between what the labs say and what you feel, is where most women get dismissed. I refuse to let that happen in my practice.
I am a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner and a DO, which means I was trained to look at the whole system, not just the number on a page. I built Osteopathic Midlife Health because I wanted one physician, not a rotating cast, sitting across from every patient, running the labs that actually matter, and building a plan around her specific body instead of a protocol pulled off a shelf.
And before I ever brought any of this to a patient, I brought it to myself first. Every hormone, every lab panel, every adjustment, I tested it on my own body before I trusted it with yours. I know what it feels like to titrate too fast and regret it. I know what it feels like to finally get the dose right and feel like yourself again for the first time in months.
This is not theory for me. This is my life, my labs, my late nights, right alongside yours.
If any of this sounds like you, the hot flashes, the labs that say you are fine when you know you are not, the sense that no one is really looking at the whole picture, I am here for you.

Working with Dr. Hertel was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health. Before finding her, my OB-GYN prescribed progesterone and told me I could either cycle it or take it daily. I wasn’t given much guidance beyond that, and while I understood that hormones fluctuate throughout the month, I didn’t feel like I had a clear plan. I was struggling with several symptoms and knew I needed more support. My first appointment with Dr. Hertel lasted a full hour and included so much education, which I truly appreciated. We discussed my symptoms, reviewed my health history, and developed a plan that included bloodwork at specific points in my cycle to get a clearer picture of what was going on. Through that process, I also discovered my ferritin was very low and have been working to improve that as well. Slowly but surely, I’m starting to feel like myself again. My symptoms have calmed down, my energy is improving, and I’m finally sleeping better. If you’re on the fence or looking for answers, I highly encourage you to make an appointment. Get your questions answered and explore whether hormone therapy may be right for you. Dr. Hertel meets you where you are, listens without judgment, and helps you create a plan that makes sense for your individual needs. Knowing I have her guidance and support gives me so much peace of mind. This stage of life is a significant chapter, and having someone help you navigate it can make all the difference.Posted on Google Lisa BurnhamTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As a guy in my 20s, I’ve learned a lot from Dr. Hertal about women’s midlife health—things I honestly never knew before. The education she shares, along with all the free content she puts out online, has helped me understand what women go through during perimenopause and menopause. Her care is specialized, thoughtful, and focused on getting to the root of the issue. From what I’ve seen, she takes her time, listens, and genuinely cares. I also feel much more aware now of what to look out for in my partner and the women in my life as they get older. If you want a doctor who truly understands women’s midlife health, Dr. Hertal is the real deal. Five stars, no question.
